Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

A day after the reported event, the local mayor said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our community who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

She added the council would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the vandalism.

At the time the artwork was first proposed, it received mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
