People have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future administration of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "We must do any agreement required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Medical Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated two more victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south region, medics reported.
