The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
