The Contents of the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the live show The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about his research, the container almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
