New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
