Patrick Bamford has signed with the Championship side just seven months after leading disrespectful songs targeting their manager, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a contract joining the Championship club in difficulty until January. His seven-year spell with Leeds finished through agreement this past summer.
One of the player's final notable acts while at Leeds was to lead abusive chants about Wilder during the club’s promotion party this spring. Now, the one-cap England international is set to play under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to rescue his beloved club out of the relegation zone.
Both men had previous conflict before Leeds won promotion to the top flight last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the playoff final by Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.
All appears has been put behind them with United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement in attack and Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Chris Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Pat yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow pro! However I valued and admired him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion together and he's a super guy, a class act. When I was playing we used to dish it out and take it and that is part and parcel of the game at every level, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I am cool with it and I told him that to Patrick.”
The forward made 18 games for Leeds last season however the ex- Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough player has faced difficulties with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
