New Year's Revelers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, so additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Warnings Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
