Locating the Venezuelan-affiliated Tanker Reportedly Pursued by the US Coast Guard

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
