Audiences are thrilled for the chilling show the Derry series, that's been earning acclaim and drawing from elements from other Stephen King works. Now, HBO declared that episode two will arrive early, released fittingly for October 31st.
Kicking off on Halloween night at 3 a.m. EST, episode two of Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, before its linear broadcast. Subsequent episodes of the series run will be released on Sundays on the network and streaming service, building toward the concluding chapter on the 14th of December.
Based in Stephen King’s It universe, It: Welcome to Derry borrows elements from King’s iconic novel while expanding on the world realized by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the recent movie adaptations. It Chapter One highlighted young characters confronting supernatural evils, so it’s fitting that the prequel continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the premiere episode of the HBO series proves it intended to increase the tension, providing heightened horror than the cinematic versions and setting a brutal tone for the rest of the season.
Set in 1962, the series presents a new generation of grown-ups and kids inhabiting a seemingly idyllic town concealing a evil heart. Derry functions through a vicious, repeating pattern—one marked by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a monstrous presence returns each 27-year cycle. While Welcome to Derry might seem like it skews too close to the movies on the surface, what differentiates the HBO Max series is its parallel storytelling—narrated via the viewpoints of young and old simultaneously. The kids are highly exposed to the monster's horror, but grown-ups aren’t spared facing their personal demons arising from local discrimination and covert otherworldly powers.
The series airs on October 31 at 3 a.m. EST.
