Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Deal.

In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the deal. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind one-run win. The very next day in the title match against the Team USA, he hit a game-tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
